Different Skin Types Explained

When browsing skincare products, you may often see that they’re intended for a certain skin type. There are four of these – and in order to get the best skincare possible, you’ll need to know which category your skin falls into. But how do you tell which skin type you have? Read on to find out...

Normal skin: Caring for normal skin is easy, but those lucky enough to have normal skin shouldn’t neglect a full skincare regimen. This skin type is lovely and thick, it often matures beautifully and doesn’t age prematurely – if you take good care of it, that is! Clean normal skin thoroughly with a daily facial cleanser such as Neutrogena Deep Clean® Facial Cleanser, and use a moisturiser with UV protection to keep your skin in perfect condition.

Dry skin: If your skin is dry, that means it naturally produces less oil. Wrinkles and other prominent lines are more apparent with dry skin, especially around the eyes and mouth. The lack of oil also leaves it more exposed to dryness and changes in weather – if you experience particular dryness when the weather turns cold or heats up, you probably have dry skin. Use Neutrogena Deep Clean® Invigorating Scrub Wash on a daily basis to give your skin a shot of energy, and use an intense moisturising cream designed for dry skin in the morning and at night, to keep hydration levels up.

Oily / acne prone skin: The opposite of dry skin – in this instance, skin produces a little too much oil, which can result in redness, pimples, blackheads and open pores. Because this skin type already has an excess of oil, you need to use oil-free skincare products to counteract it. Our Oil-Free Acne Wash Facial Cleanser helps to fight spots and prevent future breakouts, with a delicious grapefruit scent for added freshness. Those with oily skin also need to protect their skin from UV rays – choose a gentle sunscreen like Ultra Sheer® Face, which doesn’t leave a greasy layer.

Combination skin: Many people have combination skin and simply can’t pin down their skin type. Most people that fall into this category have fairly regular skin, with excess oil around the T-zone. Use a gentle wash to clean pores deeply all over the face, and use a combination of products to ensure your skin is getting a balance of treatments.

If you’re still not sure of your skin type, contact your dermatologist – they’ll be able to test your skin and find out once and for all, so you can stick with the most suitable products in the future.
